St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226)
St. Francis of Assisi was born in Assisi, Italy, to a wealthy merchant family.
As a young man, he lived a carefree life until a serious illness and imprisonment during a war changed him.
Experiencing a profound conversion, he heard Christ’s call to ‘rebuild my church’ and renounced his inheritance, choosing poverty.
He founded the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans), emphasizing humility, peace, and care for the poor. Known for his love of nature, he preached to birds and reportedly tamed a wolf terrorizing a town.
He received the stigmata in 1224, the wounds of Christ, and composed the Canticle of the Sun, praising creation.
Canonized in 1228, he’s remembered as the patron of animals and ecology for his harmonious view of God’s world. His life shows how one person’s radical faith can overcome worldly temptations through surrender to God.
In our materialistic society, St. Francis challenges us to detach from possessions and embrace simplicity. His generosity teaches that true wealth lies in giving, not accumulating. Amid environmental crises, his reverence for creation urges us to protect our planet as stewards. How can we emulate him? Start small, like sharing with those in need or appreciating nature’s beauty. Let his peace prayer guide us in sowing love amid division.
Lord, through St. Francis’s intercession, help us live with open hearts. Amen. How will you emulate his spirit today?
