Saint John of Capistrano
Saint John of Capistrano was born in 1386 in Capistrano, Italy, and died in 1456. A brilliant lawyer and governor, his life changed dramatically when imprisoned during a war. A vision prompted him to join the Franciscans in 1416, where he embraced poverty and rigorous discipline.
Under St. Bernardine of Siena’s guidance, he became a renowned preacher, traveling Europe to reform monasteries, combat heresies, and inspire conversions.
Miraculously, at 70, he rallied troops and led prayers that secured victory against the Ottoman forces at the Battle of Belgrade in 1456, saving Christendom from invasion.
Though no specific miracles are attributed post-death, his leadership is seen as divinely aided. He is remembered for his zeal, eloquence, and commitment to Church renewal, patron saint of jurists and military chaplains.
His journey from worldly success to holy service shows how God redeems our past for greater purposes, encouraging us amid doubts or failures.
In our fast-paced, conflict-ridden world, Saint John’s courage teaches us to stand firm against modern ‘invasions’ like secularism or injustice. His late-life heroism proves age is no barrier to God’s work; we too can pivot towards purpose through small acts of faith. Like him, let’s preach kindness in our circles and defend truth boldly.
Saint John of Capistrano, intercede for us to have your fearless spirit. Amen.
How will you fight the good fight today?
