Saint Of The Day – 16th October

Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque

Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque was born on July 22, 1647, in L’Hautecour, France, into a modest family. Orphaned young and plagued by illness, she found solace in prayer.

At age 24, she joined the Visitation Sisters in Paray-le-Monial, where she experienced mystical visions of Jesus Christ from 1673 to 1675. In these apparitions, Jesus revealed His Sacred Heart, aflame with love, and entrusted her with promoting its devotion to console His heart wounded by human ingratitude.

Despite ridicule and doubt from her community, with the support of her confessor, Blessed Claude de la Colombière, she persevered. She helped establish the feast of the Sacred Heart, observed on the Friday after Corpus Christi.

Margaret Mary died on October 17, 1690, at age 43. Canonized in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV, she is remembered as the Apostle of the Sacred Heart, patron of those suffering from polio and devotees of the Sacred Heart.

Her life shows how ordinary people, through faith amid trials like poverty and opposition, can spread profound spiritual messages.

In today’s fast-paced, materialistic world, St. Margaret Mary’s story teaches us to prioritize spiritual intimacy over worldly noise.

Her devotion to the Sacred Heart reminds us to respond to God’s love with gratitude, especially when facing personal struggles like illness or doubt.

By practicing small acts of reparation and trust, we can find peace amid anxiety and division.

Let her example encourage us to open our hearts to Christ’s mercy, fostering compassion in our relationships and communities.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.
