St. Albert the Great

Saint Of The Day – 15th November

St. Albert the Great

St. Albert the Great (c. 1200-1280) was born in Germany to a noble family and entered the Dominican Order around 1223. He studied at Padua and Paris, earning fame as a scholar in theology, philosophy, and natural sciences. Ordained a priest, he taught at monasteries and universities, influencing countless students, including his pupil St. Thomas Aquinas.

In 1260, he became Bishop of Regensburg but resigned after two years to resume teaching. He defended the Mendicant Orders against critics and participated in the Council of Lyon. Albert’s life exemplified intellectual rigor amid personal struggles like health issues and opposition from conservative theologians.

Miracles attributed to him include multiplying food for the poor, calming a storm during travel, and healing the afflicted through prayer. He died in 1280 and was canonized in 1931, declared a Doctor of the Church in 1933 for his synthesis of faith and reason. Remembered as the ‘Universal Doctor,’ he shows how curiosity and humility can lead to holiness, relatable for anyone facing doubts or seeking purpose in learning.

Teaching Reflection: In our fast-paced, tech-driven world, St. Albert challenges us to integrate knowledge with faith, countering the divide between science and spirituality. Amid information overload, his life teaches discernment—using intellect to glorify God, not self. Like him, we can overcome prejudice or fatigue by trusting divine wisdom, turning daily studies into acts of worship. How will you emulate this today? Let us pray: Lord, through St. Albert’s intercession, grant us minds open to Your truth and hearts eager to serve. Amen. 🙏
