Saint Of The Day – 14th October

St. Callistus

St. Callistus I lived from around 160 to 222 AD in Rome. Born into slavery, he faced immense hardships, including imprisonment in the Sardinian mines after being convicted of fighting and financial mismanagement. Through the intervention of fellow Christians, he was freed and eventually ordained a deacon under Pope Zephyrinus. In 217, he was elected pope, a role he held until his martyrdom during anti-Christian riots.

As pope, Callistus was known for his merciful policies, allowing penance and readmission to the Church for those who had committed grave sins like adultery and apostasy. This stance caused controversy but highlighted his belief in God’s boundless forgiveness.

Though no specific miracles are attributed to him during his life, his tomb became a site of veneration. He is remembered as a patron of cemetery workers and for promoting Church unity amid division.

His story resonates with anyone who has struggled with past mistakes, showing that faith can lead to profound personal renewal and leadership. Teaching Reflection. In today’s world, filled with judgment and division, St. Callistus I teaches us the power of mercy over rigidity. Just as he welcomed back the fallen, we are called to forgive others and ourselves, fostering healing in families and communities.

His rise from slave to pope reminds us that God uses our weaknesses for greater good, encouraging humility and empathy in a self-centered society. Let us emulate his compassion by reaching out to those society marginalizes.

Heavenly Father, through the intercession of St. Callistus, grant us hearts of mercy.

How will you show forgiveness today?
