Luke 12:35-38

A lamp burning in the darkness offers a quiet image of faith. In this Gospel, Jesus asks his disciples to live with that kind of readiness: attentive, expectant, and prepared to welcome him.

What happens in the Gospel

Jesus tells his disciples to be dressed for service and to keep their lamps burning. He compares them to servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding feast. They do not know precisely when he will arrive, but they want to open the door as soon as he knocks.

Then the picture takes a surprising turn. The master who finds his servants awake will not simply accept their service. He will prepare himself to serve, invite them to sit down at table, and wait on them himself.

Even if he arrives late in the night, those who remain ready will be blessed. The emphasis is not on calculating his arrival, but on remaining faithful while they wait.

What this means for us today

Christian watchfulness is not a life of nervous anticipation. Jesus does not ask us to spend our days looking for frightening signs or trying to work out when he will return. He calls us to a loving readiness rooted in trust.

That readiness takes shape in ordinary choices. We keep the lamp burning when we make time for prayer, tell the truth when it costs us, seek forgiveness after a failure, or respond patiently to someone who needs our attention. Small acts of faithfulness help make our hearts more receptive to God.

There are also seasons when waiting feels long. A prayer seems unanswered. Grief makes the days heavy. Our spiritual life feels dry. This Gospel does not pretend that the night is short. Instead, it encourages us to remain turned towards the Lord, even when we cannot yet see what he is doing.

The most beautiful detail is the master’s willingness to serve. It reveals the generosity of Christ, who comes among us not merely to demand, but to give himself. Our faithfulness is a response to his love, not a way of purchasing it.

Perhaps our task today is simple: to notice one place where love is asking us to be present, and to answer without delay. We need not do everything. We can keep the lamp entrusted to us burning.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, keep my heart awake to your presence, faithful in waiting, and ready to welcome you with love. Amen.
