Gospel of the Day: Luke 12:1-7 — Known and Cherished by God
Jesus calls us to live without hypocrisy and trust the Father, who knows every hair on our heads and never forgets us.

Gospel reading for Friday, 16 October 2026
Luke 12:1-7 is the Gospel for Friday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time in the Roman Rite.
What happens in the Gospel
An immense crowd has gathered around Jesus, but he speaks first to his disciples. He warns them against the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, comparing it to yeast: something that can spread through the whole of a person’s life, even when it begins almost unnoticed.
Nothing hidden, Jesus explains, will remain concealed forever. What is spoken in darkness will come into the light, and whispered words will eventually be heard openly.
He then addresses his friends with both seriousness and tenderness. They must not allow fear of those who can kill the body to govern their lives. Instead, they should fear God, whose authority extends beyond earthly death to eternal judgement.
Yet this warning is followed by an extraordinary reassurance. Five sparrows may be sold for very little, but not one is forgotten by God. Even the hairs of the disciples’ heads are counted. They need not be afraid: they matter far more than many sparrows.
What this means for us today
There can be a gap between the faith we show and the life we actually live. We may speak kindly in public while allowing bitterness to grow in private. We may seek approval more eagerly than truth. Jesus does not expose this danger to humiliate us, but to call us towards wholeness.
His invitation is to let our outward actions and inward intentions become one. That begins with a humble examination of conscience: where am I pretending, and where is God asking me to be honest? For Catholics, the Sacrament of Reconciliation offers a concrete place to bring that truth into the light and receive Christ’s mercy.
Jesus also puts our fears in perspective. Other people’s opinions can feel powerful, especially when faithfulness carries a cost. But their judgement is not the final word over our lives. Reverence for God helps us choose what is right rather than merely what is safe or popular.
And the God we revere is the Father who notices sparrows. His knowledge of us is not cold surveillance; it is personal care. Nothing about our struggles is invisible to him.
Today, take one small step towards honesty, trusting that you are already known and deeply loved.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, free me from hypocrisy and fear, and teach me to live honestly in the Father’s loving care. Amen.
