Luke 11:27–28

What happens in the Gospel

While Jesus is speaking, a woman in the crowd calls out to praise the mother who bore and nursed him. Her words express admiration for Jesus by honouring his mother.

Jesus responds by pointing to the deeper meaning of blessedness: hearing the word of God and keeping it. He turns the crowd’s attention from admiration alone towards a life shaped by God’s voice. The invitation is not simply to recognise something wonderful in Jesus, but to receive his teaching and allow it to change how we live.

What this means for us today

This brief Gospel asks a searching question: what happens after we hear God’s word?

We may listen to the readings at Mass, read a passage of Scripture at home, or find comfort in a familiar prayer. These are precious beginnings. Yet Jesus invites us beyond the moment of inspiration. His word is meant to take root in our decisions, our relationships and the way we respond when life becomes difficult.

Keeping God’s word does not mean earning his love through flawless behaviour. It means responding to the love he offers, trusting his wisdom and returning to him when we fall short. Grace makes possible the faithfulness we cannot sustain by our own strength.

Nor does Jesus’ response diminish Mary. Catholic faith recognises in her a beautiful example of precisely the blessedness he describes. She receives God’s message with faith and offers herself freely to his will (Luke 1:38). Her motherhood and her discipleship belong together: she welcomes the Son of God and lives in faithful response to God’s call.

For us, that response will often look ordinary. It may mean refusing to pass on an unkind remark, giving someone our undivided attention, admitting a wrong, or making room for prayer before reaching for our phone. Small acts of obedience can become places where God’s love is made visible.

Today, we do not need to attempt everything at once. We can begin by listening carefully and asking: what is one thing the Lord is inviting me to put into practice? Then, with his help, we can take that next faithful step.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, open my heart to your word and give me the grace to live it with humility, courage and love.
