Today’s Gospel Luke 16:1-8

Jesus said to his disciples, “A rich man had a steward
who was reported to him for squandering his property.
He summoned him and said,
‘What is this I hear about you?
Prepare a full account of your stewardship,
because you can no longer be my steward.’
The steward said to himself, ‘What shall I do,
now that my master is taking the position of steward away from me?
I am not strong enough to dig and I am ashamed to beg.
I know what I shall do so that,
when I am removed from the stewardship,
they may welcome me into their homes.’
He called in his master’s debtors one by one.
To the first he said, ‘How much do you owe my master?’
He replied, ‘One hundred measures of olive oil.’
He said to him, ‘Here is your promissory note.
Sit down and quickly write one for fifty.’
Then to another he said, ‘And you, how much do you owe?’
He replied, ‘One hundred measures of wheat.’
He said to him, ‘Here is your promissory note;
write one for eighty.’
And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently.
For the children of this world
are more prudent in dealing with their own generation
than the children of light.”

Today’s Gospel Reflection

In today’s Gospel from Luke 16:1-8, Jesus shares the parable of the dishonest steward, a story that invites us to reflect deeply on how we manage what is entrusted to us. A rich man discovers his steward is squandering his property and demands an accounting, announcing the end of his stewardship. Facing an uncertain future, the steward, unwilling to beg or labor manually, devises a clever plan. He summons his master’s debtors and reduces their debts—one from a hundred measures of olive oil to fifty, another from a hundred measures of wheat to eighty. Surprisingly, the master praises the steward’s prudence, not his honesty, but his foresight in securing his future.

Jesus draws a profound lesson from this: ‘The children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own generation than the children of light.’ Here, the ‘children of light’ are believers, called to spiritual wisdom. The key teaching is a call to shrewdness in our faith. Just as the steward used worldly resources to prepare for his dismissal, we are urged to use our material blessings—time, talents, and treasures—to build eternal relationships and secure our place in God’s kingdom. This isn’t about dishonesty, but about intentionality. In a world that often prioritizes fleeting gains, we are encouraged to invest in what lasts: acts of mercy, generosity, and devotion that echo into eternity.

Let this parable warm your heart and inspire prudent faith. How might you steward God’s gifts today to welcome others into His light? Take a moment in prayer: Lord, grant us the wisdom to use our resources for Your glory. Help us be faithful stewards, preparing for the heavenly home You promise. Amen. 🙏
