Today’s Gospel – Luke 18:1-8
Jesus told his disciples a parable
about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary.
He said, “There was a judge in a certain town
who neither feared God nor respected any human being.
And a widow in that town used to come to him and say,
‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.’
For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought,
‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being,
because this widow keeps bothering me
I shall deliver a just decision for her
lest she finally come and strike me.'”
The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says.
Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones
who call out to him day and night?
Will he be slow to answer them?
I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily.
But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
Today’s Gospel Reflection
Today’s Gospel from Luke 18:1-8 invites us into a profound reflection on the essence of prayer and faith. Jesus shares the parable of a persistent widow who approaches an unjust judge, demanding justice against her adversary. This judge, indifferent to God and humanity, initially ignores her pleas. Yet, worn down by her relentless visits, he finally grants her request, not out of righteousness, but to avoid further annoyance.
Jesus uses this story to contrast the judge’s reluctance with God’s loving responsiveness. If even a callous judge yields to persistence, how much more will our merciful Father answer the cries of His chosen ones who pray day and night? God promises not to delay but to deliver justice speedily. This teaches us the vital importance of persevering in prayer, even when answers seem slow. Prayer is not about changing God’s mind but aligning our hearts with His will, building our trust in His perfect timing.
In our busy lives, it’s easy to grow weary in prayer. But this Gospel encourages us to persist, knowing that God hears every whisper. It calls us to a faith that endures, one that stands firm amid trials. As we face injustices or personal struggles, let us turn to prayer with the widow’s determination, confident in God’s faithfulness.
When the Son of Man returns, may He find us steadfast in faith, our prayers a testament to our devotion. Take a moment today to pray persistently for your needs and the world’s healing. Let us pray: Heavenly Father, teach us to pray without ceasing, trusting in Your justice and love. Strengthen our faith to persevere. Amen. 🕊️
