Today’s Gospel Luke 12:35-38
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Gird your loins and light your lamps
and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding,
ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks.
Blessed are those servants
whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival.
Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself,
have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them.
And should he come in the second or third watch
and find them prepared in this way,
blessed are those servants.”
Today’s Gospel Reflection
Today’s Gospel from Luke 12:35-38 invites us into a beautiful reflection on vigilance and readiness in our faith journey. Jesus speaks to his disciples, urging them to ‘gird your loins and light your lamps,’ evoking the image of servants prepared for their master’s unexpected return from a wedding feast. These servants stand alert, ready to open the door at the first knock, embodying a life of faithful anticipation.
The key teaching here is profound: blessed are those whom the master finds watchful. In an astonishing reversal, the master will gird himself, seat the servants at the table, and serve them. This mirrors the upside-down kingdom of God, where the Lord Himself becomes the servant to the faithful. Even if he arrives in the second or third watch, late into the night, their preparedness brings blessing.
As Catholics, this calls us to live with lamps lit, hearts open, ever ready for Christ’s return. In our busy world, vigilance means daily prayer, sacraments, and acts of love, trusting that our faithful waiting will be met with divine generosity. Let this inspire you to cultivate a watchful spirit, knowing that our Master’s love surprises with joy. 🙏
Take a moment now to pray: Lord Jesus, help us stay vigilant in faith, ready to welcome You always. Amen.
