Saint Of The Day – 27th October

Saint Frumentius

St. Frumentius (c. 300 – c. 383 AD) was born in Tyre, Lebanon, to a Christian family. As a young boy, he and his brother Aedesius accompanied their uncle on a voyage to Ethiopia. Their ship was attacked by locals, and most aboard were killed, but the brothers were spared and brought to the royal court as slaves. Remarkably, they gained the trust of the king, who appointed Frumentius as his secretary and Aedesius as cupbearer.

After the king’s death, Frumentius became regent for the young prince Ezana. During this time, he encouraged Christian merchants, cared for persecuted believers, and gradually introduced Christian teachings to the court and people. Recognizing his calling, Frumentius journeyed to Alexandria, Egypt, where Bishop St. Athanasius ordained him as the first bishop of Aksum in 328 AD.

Returning to Ethiopia, he founded churches, ordained native clergy, and led King Ezana to baptism around 330 AD, making Ethiopia one of the world’s first Christian nations. No specific miracles are recorded, but his life itself was a testament to God’s providence amid human struggles like loss, enslavement, and cultural barriers.

St. Frumentius faced the challenge of planting faith in a pagan land, much like we navigate a secular world today. His story shows that perseverance and quiet influence can transform societies, reminding us to share our faith boldly yet compassionately in daily interactions. In an era of division, let his example inspire us to build bridges through love and truth.

Lord, through the intercession of St. Frumentius, grant us the courage to evangelize where we are planted. Help us turn trials into testimonies of Your grace. Amen.

How will you share Christ’s light today? 🙏
