Saint Of The Day – 15th October

Saint Teresa of Ávila

Saint Teresa of Ávila was born on March 28, 1515, in Ávila, Spain, and died on October 4, 1582. From a noble family, she entered the Carmelite convent at age 20 but initially led a somewhat worldly life within it. A severe illness in her 20s sparked a deep conversion, leading to profound mystical experiences, including visions and the famous transverberation of her heart by an angel, symbolizing ecstatic divine love.

She reformed the Carmelite Order, co-founding the Discalced Carmelites with Saint John of the Cross, emphasizing poverty, prayer, and enclosure.

Despite chronic health issues, opposition, and travels, she established 17 convents and authored spiritual masterpieces like The Interior Castle and The Way of Perfection, mapping the soul’s journey to God. Canonized in 1622 and declared the first female Doctor of the Church in 1970, she is remembered for her insights into contemplative prayer and overcoming human frailties through faith.

In an era of constant distractions and material pursuits, Saint Teresa’s life encourages us to prioritize interior silence and trust in God. She faced illnesses, doubts, and criticisms yet found strength in prayer, teaching that small, loving acts lead to holiness.

Today, amid stress and busyness, her ‘interior castle’ reminds us to nurture our spiritual core, finding peace in God’s presence rather than external successes.

Emulate her by setting aside time for quiet reflection.

How will you open your heart to divine love today?

Let us pray, Saint Teresa, intercede for us to grow in prayerful union with God. Amen.
