Today’s Gospel Luke 11:29-32
While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them,
“This generation is an evil generation;
it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,
except the sign of Jonah.
Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,
so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the judgment
the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation
and she will condemn them,
because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation
and condemn it,
because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,
and there is something greater than Jonah here.”
Today’s Gospel Reflection
Dear friends in Christ, today’s Gospel from Luke 11:29-32 invites us into a profound moment of reflection. Jesus speaks to a crowd seeking miraculous signs, yet He points them to something far deeper: the sign of Jonah, a call to repentance and transformation. Just as Jonah’s preaching led the Ninevites to turn from their ways, and the Queen of the South journeyed far to seek Solomon’s wisdom, so too does Jesus stand before us as the ultimate sign, greater than both.
This passage reminds us that God’s grace is not hidden behind spectacles but revealed in the person of Christ. The people of Nineveh repented at Jonah’s word, and the queen recognized Solomon’s wisdom. How much more should we respond to Jesus, who offers eternal life? In our busy world, we often seek quick proofs or distractions, but Jesus urges us to listen, repent, and follow. The key teaching here is clear: true faith doesn’t demand signs; it responds to God’s Word with a humble heart. Let this encourage you today to examine your life, seek the greater wisdom in Scripture and prayer, and turn towards the light of Christ.
As we ponder these words, may they stir our souls to deeper devotion.
Take a moment to pray: Lord Jesus, help us to recognize You as the sign we need. Grant us the grace to repent like the Ninevites and seek Your wisdom like the queen. Draw us closer to Your heart. Amen. 🙏
