Today’s Gospel from Luke 9:57-62 presents a powerful challenge from Jesus, revealing the true cost of discipleship. As Jesus and His disciples travel, a man enthusiastically declares, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ Jesus responds soberly, ‘Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head,’ highlighting the hardships and lack of worldly security in following Him.
To another, Jesus directly says, ‘Follow me,’ but the man asks to first bury his father. Jesus replies, ‘Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the Kingdom of God,’ urging priority to the spiritual mission over earthly duties. A third man agrees to follow but wants to bid farewell to his family. Jesus warns, ‘No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the Kingdom of God,’ using the image of plowing to emphasize forward focus and total dedication.
The key teaching here is the call to undivided commitment. Jesus invites us not to a comfortable path, but to one of sacrifice and purpose, where God’s Kingdom takes precedence. In our busy lives, this encourages us to examine what holds us back – attachments, fears, or obligations – and to step forward in faith. It’s a warm reminder that true discipleship brings joy in serving Christ fully, fostering deeper devotion and peace.
Let us reflect: What is God asking me to leave behind today? Take a moment in prayer: Lord Jesus, strengthen my resolve to follow You wholeheartedly. Help me plow straight toward Your Kingdom. Amen. 🙏
